Welcome back to Day 3 of the Stop Haunting Yourself Quest! Today, weâre wrapping up our journey by learning how to âcast a daily spellâ to encourage positive thinking. Iâll guide you through a daily gratitude practice and teach you the STOP Spellâa method to interrupt trick thoughts in the moment. These practices will give you tools to maintain a positive mindset well beyond this quest.
Why Daily Practices Matter
Building a positive mindset isnât a one-time effortâitâs an ongoing process. Simple but powerful daily habits like gratitude and the STOP Spell will help you stay resilient, even during challenging times. We all go through ups and downs, and these practices can make a real difference in how you handle lifeâs inevitable tough moments.
Consistently practising gratitude helps shift your focus toward the good, which naturally uplifts your energy. The STOP Spell, on the other hand, is a quick tool to stop trick thoughts in their tracks, allowing you to respond in a way that aligns with your goals and values.
Gratitude as a Daily Spell
Gratitude is a wonderful antidote to feelings of fear, envy, anger, and sadness. While itâs normal to experience multiple emotions at once, gratitude can shift your focus toward the positive aspects of life. Practising gratitude helped me through a particularly difficult time when I lost three of my pets in three months. It lifted my spirits and helped me stay resilient.
How to Practise Daily Gratitude
Creating a gratitude habit can be as simple as listing three things youâre grateful for each day. Here are a few ideas:
> Categories: Think of something about yourself, your family or home, and the world around you that youâre grateful for.
> Person, Place, Thing: Identify a person, a place, and a thing that bring you joy.
> Past, Present, Future: Be grateful for something from the past, something happening now, and something youâre looking forward to.
> End of Day Reflection: Reflect on your favourite three moments from the day before you go to sleep for a positive end to your day.
Tips for Building Your Gratitude Habit
To make this practice stick, try pairing it with something you already do, like your morning coffee or your bedtime routine. Setting a reminder on your phone can also help. Remember, this doesnât have to be perfect! Consistency is more important than perfection, and youâll see benefits over time.
The STOP Spell
The STOP Spell is a simple but effective way to interrupt trick thoughts in real time. While gratitude helps you proactively shift focus, the STOP Spell helps you manage unhelpful thoughts in the moment. I still use it myself when I notice my mind spiralling into negativity.
How the STOP Spell Works:
S â Say âStopâ Mentally tell yourself âStopâ when a trick thought arises. This creates a gap between the thought and your reaction.
T â Think about it Question the thought: Is it true? Is it helpful? Often, just asking these questions can weaken the thoughtâs power.
O â Observe it objectively Remind yourself that you are not your thoughts. You can choose whether or not to accept a thought as fact.
P â Power it up with positivity Flip the trick thought into an empowering treat thought. Use the same reframing approach we practised on Day 2 to create a supportive response.
Example of the STOP Spell in Action:
Trick Thought: âIâll never get this right.â
STOP: Say âStopâ internally to create space.
THINK: Is this really true? Helpful?
OBSERVE: Recognise it as just a thought.
POWER IT UP: âIâm learning, and with practice, Iâll improve.â
The key takeaway here is to create a gap between your thoughts and your reactions, giving you control over how you choose to respond.
Your Quest Task for Day 3
Plan Your Gratitude Practice Decide on a time each day to practise gratitude. Some people find mornings helpful to set a positive tone, while others enjoy reflecting before bed.
Bonus: Note the STOP Spell Write down the STOP Spell somewhere accessibleâon your phone, in a notebook, or somewhere you can see it often. This will make it easier to remember and use whenever trick thoughts come up.
Common Questions About Daily Practices
Q: What if I struggle to find things Iâm grateful for?Answer: If youâre finding it hard to think of things, start small. Focus on basic comforts like a warm bed or clean water. Over time, youâll find it easier to notice positive things.
Q: What if I forget to do these practices?Answer: Donât worryâthis is completely normal when building new habits. Be kind to yourself, and get back on track when you remember. Use reminders or pair the habit with something you already do daily.
Q: How long does it take to see results?Answer: Everyone is different. Some people feel benefits immediately, while for others, it takes time. Stick with it consistently, and trust that progress will come, even if it feels subtle at first.
Q: Will these practices cure me?Answer: Remember, youâre not broken. These practices arenât about âcuringâ but about helping you see your strengths and supporting your growth. They can help shift your perspective so that you feel more empowered and resilient.
